Does the University have any system of informing unsuccessful applicants?

No! The list of successful applicants is posted on the University Notice Boards and on the UG website at www.ug.edu.gh. The University does not communicate with unsuccessful applicants.

Why does it take a long time for the University to prosecute students who forge their grades to gain admission?

The University relies on WAEC for authentic results to crosscheck with what students present. The process demands thoroughness and as such very detailed work has to be done. The large number of applications received however slows down the process. With the introduction of the electronic applications, the process would hopefully be hastened.

Does fee paying guarantee automatic qualification for the University?

No! The UG has a quota each year for foreign students. The unused portion of this quota is offered to Ghanaian applicants who qualify but may not make the cu-off aggregates for their programme choices. A cut off even under this category may become necessary depending on the quota, number of applicants and their qualifications.

Are the courses offered on the Distance Education Programme the same as those offered on the Main Campus?

Yes! The quality of courses run by the University of Ghana, are the same irrespective of the place or mode of delivery and they lead to the award of the same degrees.

Can one come to the University of Ghana with a transfer from another University in Ghana?

In principle yes but in practice, due to entry qualification differentials, as well as different programmes on offer, students may not necessarily qualify for transfer.

Once admitted, can a student switch his programme e.g. from BA in Economics to Business Administration?

No! Students are admitted to programmes and would graduate in same.

Can one buy more than one Scratch Card?

If one wishes to apply to different programmes, one could buy more than one card to boost one's chances. E.g. one could choose both the Main and City Campuses by buying two cards.

How are the WASSSCE grades interpreted?

The interpretation as given by WAEC is as follows:

How long does it take the University to acknowledge receipt of an application online?

Acknowledgement is immediate. Candidates can print out the acknowledgement as evidence of submission of application.

What is the maximum number of subjects one can choose from each of the Subject groupings under the B.A. Programme?

Only one subject from each group and a maximum of four subjects.

Is there a brochure to give information necessary to the application process?

All information vital to the application process and the completion of the online application is available at the University website at http://admission.ug.edu.gh. Applicants are advised to visit the site.

Why is there a difference in the cut off aggregates for males and females?

ANSWER: The University of Ghana has a Policy for Gender Affirmative Action to encourage the enrolment of females at the University in relation to the male enrolment.

Who determines the status of Less Endowed Schools?

This is determined by the Ghana Education Service (GES) and not the University of Ghana. The University however writes to the Heads of such institutions to encourage their bright students to apply.

Does one stand the chance of getting admitted to one's second choice programme?

Most of the Departmental quotas are exhausted after the consideration of first choice applicants. It is very important therefore to carefully consider and choose what one wants to do at the University.

Does the University have any special concession for disabled students?

Yes, the University admits this category of applicants on a concessionary basis. Such students should have obtained at least aggregate 24 and would have to be examined and certified by the Director of Medical Services of the University of Ghana.

If one enters the University as a fee paying student, can that status (fee-paying) change along the line to regular non fee paying student?

No! Once a fee paying student, always a fee paying student. In other words, you cannot change your admission status from fee paying to regular. If a fee paying student can no longer sustain the payment of fees, he has to withdraw his studentship.

Is there any age limit for admission to Level 100?

No! There is no age limit in education.

Does one automatically get into the Medical School after being admitted into the Biological Sciences?

The Medical School can only admit a limited number of students each year and can therefore not absorb all students admitted into the Biological sciences. Admission is dependent strictly on performance after Level 100 and at the selection interview. Students should however not see going to the Medical School as a matter of life and death. Other programme options in the Sciences are equally good.

What happens in the event of a power outage whilst applying on-line?

If one is unable to submit one's application for any particular reason, one can always go back to process the application afresh. One can make changes at any time between now and the deadline which is the 31st March. One must however keep the details on the scratch card. A submitted application would be acknowledged by the University. Applicants can print out their completed forms and acknowledgement for their records.

Does the University offer B.A. Economics or B. Sc Economics?

The University of Ghana offers BA Economics.

Can a student pursue two programmes at the same time, say a B.A and Sandwich programme concurrently?

Students of the University of Ghana cannot register for two programmes at the same time. Any exception would have to have the permission of the Vice Chancellor.

Does the University defer the application of unsuccessful applicants from one year to the following year?

No! Applications are considered on a yearly basis only.

What fees are paid by fee paying students?

The fees change every year. Interested applicants may contact the UG website for further information.

Is one disadvantaged by the number of times one writes the WASSSCE examinations?

No! The number of times one writes the examinations and the year of completion do not really matter. However, in very few peculiar cases, if the Board has to introduce some criteria, this could be used.

How does one obtain a Scratch Card?

One can purchase the scratch card at any of the places advertised including Ecobank, Ghana Commercial Bank, Unibank, H.F.C and at all the Workers' Colleges.

Is B.A Computer Science the same as B.Sc Computer Science?

B. Sc Computer Science is offered by the Faculty of Science and B.A Computer Science is offered by the Faculty of Social Studies.

How will those in remote places without internet services apply for admission?

If they are interested in applying to the University of Ghana, they would have to do a little more to have access to an internet facility.

Does the University offer B.A Administration or B. Sc Administration?

The University offers B.Sc Administration.

What are the subject requirements for the Nursing programme?

• Core Mathematics, English & Science ( Minimum C4-6/D)
• Three Electives from, Chemistry, Physics , Biology or Elective Mathematics
• General Agriculture, Physics & Chemistry
• Three General Arts Electives/ Home Economics

Why is it that the University offers applicants courses that they did not opt for?

The choice of an applicant will be subject to the availability of space, the general qualification of other applicants to the same programme, Departmental requirements and any other criteria which may be necessitated during the admissions process.

Can a student read Law at the undergraduate level?

No. Currently the University of Ghana offers a post first degree programme Law. You will need to have a good first degree, take an entrance examination and in addition attend a selection interview.

Can a candidate with aggregate 12 but E in English gain admission?

It is important to know your background e.g. General Arts/ Vocational/ Business/ Visual Arts etc and the grades you made in each subject at the Senior High School, and what programme you want to read at the University of Ghana.

How does the University compute the results of students with multiple result slips?

The aggregate is calculated by taking the best grades of all the examinations taken.

Can Business students from the Senior High School apply to do B.A?

Yes but unfortunately their cut-off is higher than those of general Arts students.

Can Ghanaians with foreign background without core science apply for admission?

Yes. The University processes their applications separately from the general WAEC applicants.

Why is it that when you submit your application on the net, the aggregate given seem different from what you think?

At the first instance on submitting your application to the University on-line, an acknowledgement is given containing your true aggregate depending on the first choice programme you selected.

Why are some candidates not offered the exact course they selected on their applications?

See answer to Question 31. A lot of consideration goes into determining what subjects to offer an applicant. This includes subject combinations, depending on the number of credit hours, subject groupings etc.

Are there any disparities between fees paid at the Main Campus and on the City Campus?

Yes, regular students at the Main Campus have their tuition subsidized by the Ghana Government whilst tuition at the City Campus is not covered by government subsidy.

How many times can one re-sit the remedial exams at the Senior High School level?

The University of Ghana cannot decide this for any applicant but provision is made for three attempts at any examination. You will need provide information for all these examinations taken.

If someone pursues B.Sc Engineering in Legon, can the person continue to pursue his masters outside the country in same field?

Definitely. Degrees awarded by the University of Ghana are recognised the world over. Once the person gets a good degree in B.Sc Engineering he/she can further her studies at any other university.

Please throw more light on Mature Students Admission.

To apply as a mature student, applicant should be at least 30 years old, and should in addition pass an entrance examination usually conducted in October. For further information on this interested applicants should contact the Resident Tutor at the Accra Workers College.

What do Diploma holders need in order to pursue a degree at the University of Ghana?

Currently, the University accepts students holding Diploma from only the University of Ghana and its affiliate institutions. The minimum admission requirement is an FGPA ( full grade point average of 3.25.

Can a Diploma student change his area of study upon gaining admission to the University?

No! A Diploma holder will be admitted to major in his/her area of previous study unless applicant obtained a distinction at the Diploma level.

Can someone with WAEC 'O' or 'A'-Level apply to the University?

No! The University of Ghana no longer accepts applicants with WAEC 'O' or 'A'-Level certificates.

Does the University accept A.C.C.A. certificates?

No! The University does not accept professional certificates for admission. Holders of such certificates may apply either through the Mature Students or Diploma entrance examinations.

Do Teachers Certificate 'A' holders qualify to write the Diploma exams?

Yes! Applicants with Teacher's Certificate 'A' qualify to write the Diploma entrance examinations scheduled for April 4th this year.

Who qualifies to come to the University as a mature student?

Anybody who is 30 years old can apply to write the entrance examination in October each year. For further enquiries interested applicants should contact the Accra Workers College.

Who qualifies to write the Diploma examinations?

Applicants with a pass in all the four core subjects i.e. Core English, Maths, Integrated Science and Social Studies and in addition pass in TWO elective subjects.

Does the University of Ghana consider professional certificates when offering admissions?

See Question 5. The University of Ghana is an academic institution and therefore does not consider professional certificates such as A.C.C.A etc as pre-requisites for admission to its programmes.

Does the University consider HND as admission requirement?

No! At the moment the University does not accept HND qualifications for admissions. HND holders would have to use their WASSSCE or SSSCE results to apply or apply as mature students.

What is the duration for the Diploma Programme?

Two years.

Can one apply for admission whilst still awaiting the release of NOV/DEC results?

The deadline for the submission of application to the University of Ghana is the 31st March. Any results available to applicants by this deadline will be acceptable for admission purposes.

How can fresh graduates from the University apply to graduate school considering the fact that they have not yet officially graduated and the deadline for application is just at the corner?

To apply for admission, on should have all the admission requirements by the deadline, which in this case is the 31st of March. For just completed B.A. students from the University of Ghana, who are yet to receive their certificates, the University sympathises with such prospective applicants. Due to the large number of B.A students it takes quite a while to complete the graduation process. The University is doing everything possible to ensure that in future all students would receive their certificates in November.

Please expatiate on the requirements for graduate school.

A good first degree with a minimum of Second Class Lower. Some programmes may require some years of work experience. You may contact the School of Research and Graduate Studies or the Department/Faculty of interest for further information.

Can one do the Masters programme on part-time basis?

Apart from the PHD Programmes all other programmes are on full-time basis only. The M.A programme is one year full time programme. One can ask for an extension for up to one more year. The M.Phil is a two year full time programme but one can also ask for extension and the PHD is a three year full time programme or a five year part-time programme. One can however ask for extension up to two more years.

If you apply for admission to graduate school on-line, what happens to the supporting documents that the University demands?

The complete package of graduate admission is the on-line application plus the submission of authenticated certificates, transcripts and reference forms to the School of Research and Graduate Studies. Your on-line application and additional submissions must be received by the School of Research and Graduate Studies by the close of 31st March.

What are the full fees for graduate programmes like MBA?

Fees are subject to change every year and also differ from Department to Department. One should contact the School of Research and Graduate Studies any updates.

Can graduate applicants submit reference from their employers?

No! The University requires academic reference only.

What are the criteria for qualification to do MBA?

As stated earlier, a good first degree but in addition you would have to pass an entrance examination. You may contact the School of Research and Graduate Studies for further details.

Is National Service a prerequisite to graduate admission?

At the moment no. For the post first degree programme at the Faculty of Law however, this is a requirement.

Is it the same kind of research proposal written at the undergraduate level which is demanded when applying for graduate programme?

The proposal has to indicate which area one wants to undertake graduate study. This will be forwarded to the appropriate Departments to see whether supervisors are available before admission could be offered.

How can one attach the required documents when applying on-line for graduate admission?

See Question 4. You will submit an on-line application and in addition submit other required documentation to the School of Research and Graduate Studies
